Clarity Technologies Reports a Material Increase in Advanced Technology Cataract Lens Selections Due to Patient Education Videos

Clarity Technologies, creator of the leading Practice Performance System for healthcare, has released new survey data that highlights the effectiveness of its video-driven patient education solution that helps cataract patients make informed decisions about advanced technology lens options.

The findings demonstrate that patients who received these educational videos were materially more likely to select advanced technology lenses at an additional out-of-pocket expense, which offer enhanced vision compared to standard mono-focal lenses, typically covered by health insurance. 

The survey evaluated the responses of over 21,500 patients who received the educational videos prior to their cataract evaluations. The results confirm that these videos not only improve patient understanding of their surgical options but also positively impact the adoption of advanced technology lenses, leading to increased revenue for ocular practices. 

Here are some of the key results from the survey: 

  • Helpful Content: Of the patients who responded, 90.87% reported finding the Clarity patient education video series helpful in understanding their surgical options. 
  • Surgical Decisions: 89.11% of respondents confirmed they underwent cataract surgery. 
  • Lens Selection: 42.07% of patients who had surgery, or were scheduled for surgery chose an advanced technology lens, which typically comes with additional out-of-pocket costs.

The Engagement module, as part of the Clarity Practice Performance System, delivers video education to patients via text messages before their consultation with their healthcare provider. The aim is to provide patients with essential information in advance, allowing them time to absorb the material to make more informed decisions regarding lens options, rather than feeling rushed during their in-office consultations. 

In a related survey conducted in July 2023, Clarity Technologies collected data from 20 eyecare practices across the United States. These practices reported a significant increase in the selection of advanced technology lenses after implementing the patient education solution. On average, the conversion rate for advanced lens adoption grew by 52.25%, compared to the previous year prior to the implementation of Clarity’s patient education solution. 

In that survey there were a few notable examples: 

  • A 227% increase in conversion for a Denver practice, where advanced lens adoption jumped from 14% to 46%. 
  • A 82% increase for a Florida practice, where adoption rose from 34% to 62%. 
  • A 47% increase for an already high-performing Chicago practice, where adoption grew from 50% to 74%.

Practice owners also reported reduced consultation times and increased patient satisfaction, further underscoring the effectiveness of Clarity Technologies’ education system.
